Flight Engineers were introduced into the RAF in 1941. Their primary role was to assist pilots in the flying of large, multi-engine aircraft that had become too technically complex to be operated by a single pilot. By taking over management of the aircraft’s various system the Flight Engineer released the pilot to concentrate on the actual flying of the aircraft.

Throughout their history, Flight Engineers, latterly known as Air Engineers, served their crews and the wider RAF with distinction in every major theatre of war, from World War 2 through to the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts.
