Air Engineer training on the Hawker Siddeley Dominie commenced in March 1977, when the aircraft was delivered to RAF Finningley. This marked the replacement of the Vickers Varsity, which had previously been used for training aircrew including engineers.

The Dominie was used in conjunction with navigator training, and although flying hours for engineers were reduced over time, it remained a key platform for practical training exercises. The training continued at RAF Finningley until its closure in 1995, after which it moved to RAF Cranwell, where it continued until the Air Engineer trade was eventually phased out in 2008.
