On 20th August 2024 Sqn Ldr Ken Symonds celebrated his 100th birthday. His friend, neighbour and carer, Deborah Follet had planned a grand birthday party to celebrate Ken’s life and career – due to take place on Saturday 31st August .

Unfortunately Ken passed passed away on 25th August. Nevertheless, the crowds turned out to celebrate in Ken’s absence. It was Ken’s wish that his jacket, photo and glass of whisky made an appearance.

The large RAF Ensign was flown on his birthday and during the celebration event.

The photos below give some idea of how highly regarded Ken was amongst his friends, neighbours and fellow Flight Engineers. The villagers maintained a continuous vigil by Ken’s coffin, in the church, until it was removed on the Saturday afternoon.

Many thanks to the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight for the flypast. Check out the video below where you’ll see the villagers marking a large letter “E” on the village green,

Flags representing some of the many countries that Ken visited.
